Enable Alabama Savings Plan Opens for Business

Montgomery, AL (February 27, 2017) – Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer announced the statewide launch of the Enable Savings Plan Alabama today. Enable provides individuals with disabilities an opportunity to save for their future in tax-free savings accounts and pay for everyday expenses without jeopardizing access to public funds. Eligible individuals living in Alabama can open an account by visiting

“Today marks an exciting day for some very important members of the Alabama community,” said Treasurer Boozer. “Enable Alabama is intended to create financial independence for individuals with disabilities and support quality of life. We are thrilled to say Enable Alabama is officially open for business.”

Stephanie Miner, an Alabama native and advocate for the disability community, became the very first Enable Alabama account owner with a ceremonial account opening during the Alabama disABILITY Conference.

“Whether it’s for my health needs or for my everyday personal expenses, I am excited to have a savings account that is all mine,” said Stephanie Miner. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible for not only me, but for everyone in our community living with disabilities.”

Offered through the Alabama State Treasurer’s office, Enable Alabama is made possible through an agreement with the national Enable Savings Plan, which is managed by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and First National Bank of Omaha.

“For far too long individuals with disabilities and their families have had very few options to save,” said Jack Knight, ABLE Program Board member. “This marks a historic turning point that Alabamians have been patiently waiting for. We’re proud to work with the Enable Savings Plan to offer this tailored program to our residents.”
